Under the name TOKU MEI, Dutch experimental producer Bas Ophof creates a lo-fi fusion of hip-hop and jazz. For over a decade he has been honing his sound design and production skills inspired by artists like J Dilla, Knxwledge and DJ Shadow. Starting in his parents attic with little more than a classic sampler, he learned the tools of the trade over time. He knew he was on the right path when he was accepted by the local conservatory.

With a lot of collaborative musical projects and stage experiences in multiple genres under his belt, TOKU MEI knew he found the sound for his solo endeavor when he won the Amsterdam Dance Event Demolition hosted by Honorable C.N.O.T.E. and Bigunlimited. This resulted in

him experimenting with short live videos at various locations via various social media channels (YouTube, Instagram and TikTok). These videos are currently being picked up by various platforms, including STEEZYASFUCK (1.14 million followers on YouTube).

With 2 EP releases (‘Drift’ in 2022 & ’Past Tense’ in 2023) he created with performance in mind, this year he will be featured on the Amersfoort World Jazz festival line-up. In addition to that he is working on the next musical project that will be supported by a short movie. Backed by Production House KOSMIK, 2023 will be all about releasing new music and further developing its live performances, towing between where lo-fi came from and where it’s going next.
